Social Networking and Security or Lack of When Promoting Your Brand

When security comes to mind, what do you think of? Malls? Banks? Padlocks? Alarm systems? With how technology has grown, security is also important in other aspects such as social networks.

In the 21st century, most
people in the world are connected through some sort of social network such as Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn, etc. Social networks were created to allow people to connect easily with some theme in common. One example would be LinkedIn where people are trying to connect in a professional environment and give information about themselves such as their email, and their job experience. When you are signing for any social network for some sort of service, they are storing your data somewhere from posts you make or your IP Address from where you logged in from. This is where security is an important aspect in the world of social media. There is some information you simply do not want the whole world to know. You can think of the space you have online as if it was your own personal bedroom. There are plenty of different types of information you do not want just anyone to know.

Security can be thought of as a very useful in the world of social networking. People can think of it as a sort of filter. The security allows certain people in to see different type of information, which it allows others to see another page such as a road block saying they do not have permissions to access such a page. So there is no need of thinking of security as if it was an army of security officers coming down to clean up, but as a way to keep yourself safe as if it was the door to your room and how only some people will have the key to open it.

Social networking is important for other aspects as well besides people wanting to connect themselves to other people. Brands want to get themselves out there in the world, and one of the best ways to do it is with social networking. Social networks are a big trend right now especially with how Facebook, Google+, Twitter, Tumblr, LinkedIn and more are such big names with a large number of daily active users. Provided that there is a good amount of interaction between the target audience and a brand, both sides could easily benefit. It could mean otherwise though if a brand does not use social networks with a strong amount of security because no one wants to have private information stolen. It would feel just as bad as having your own wallet stolen!

  1. This is a very interesting look at social media from a security point of view. Next time, you should think about backing up some of your points with information from experts in the area. I thought that your comparison of security to a road block or security officers was nice, and it helped me visualize the idea better. I have not used much Google+ yet, do you recommend it over other sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn? I will be sure to look over the security of my social network accounts and make sure that they are protected!
