Video Game Lab

One day, Craig and I were trying out a myriad of games. The games we found interesting were How To Be Happy, Passage, This Is The Only Level, QWOP and Super Puzzle Platformer (in the same respective order as the images above). These games had very interesting mechanics, but the few I would like to talk about are This Is The Only Level, QWOP and Super Puzzle Platformer.

This Is The Only Level

During the course of This Is The Only Level, there is an elephant who continuously travels across a single map with multiple different variations. There is an elephant, a single room, a button and an exit to win the level. The only knowledge necessary before coming into the game is understanding how to use arrow keys and following instructions on the screen. I found the game to be partially a platform mechanic because there are spikes that will kill your elephant and restart the level. I also believe there is a memory mechanic because you learn from your mistakes in order to complete the level.

QWOP

QWOP is a 100-meter dash race, but it isn't your average racing game. You have control over both calves and thighs in the game and have to be able to move them accordingly in order to cross the finish line. Sounds easy until you actually try it out yourself. Some people may think they take their body for granted because you will realize how difficult it is to control legs. The main mechanic in QWOP is a goal mechanic of cross the finish line.

Super Puzzle Platformer

Super Puzzle Platformer was a very well put together game that consisted of puzzle and platforming mechanics. Initially, it reminded me of a game of tetris because of how the pieces were like. I noticed that the puzzle mechanic was quite obvious because the moment you start the game, you are able to shoot down blocks of the same color. If you break down a single block enough, it will destroy all adjacent blocks of the same color. If you are not careful though, you could end up falling. This displays the platforming mechanic because each block is a platform that protects you from falling onto the spikes.
