Rule The Die

Description

Rule The Die a strategy board game for two players on a 12×12 square board. Each player controls 6 pieces, representing their own army. The objective of the game is to eliminate all of the opposing player’s pieces.

Core Mechanics

  • Dice rolling
  • Grid movement

Materials

  • 2 players
  • 2 die
  • post-it notes, sheets of paper or tokens
  • pencil or pen

Initial setup

  • Create two sets of pieces per player. Each player should have one set of four and one set of two. You can use either colors to differentiate them or use a pen to create a mark to differentiate them. The set of two will be important for token gameplay.
  • Draw up a 12x12 board on a sheet of paper.
  • Set up tokens within the first two rows nearest to the player.
  • Both players will roll a die before the game starts. Whoever has the larger number will go first.

Basic gameplay

Every turn begins with a die roll. A player may optionally call out the number they think they might roll. If the player calls the number correctly, they may skip the opponent’s next turn.

After a player rolls a die, the number on the die dictates the number of space he/she can move. These moves can be used across all the player’s tokens. A token can only move up, down, left and right (no diagonals).

Token gameplay

While a token is in play, there are multiple scenarios it can be in.
 - If a token is adjacent with an enemy (excluding diagonal), a battle must begin where both players must roll a die. The player who rolls the higher die keeps their token, while the other is captured. In the case of a die, roll again.
 - If a token is surrounded by enemies, it is eliminated (excluding diagonal).

An important factor is knowing when you are battling with your set of two. These tokens are special tokens. When they are in battle, you add 1 to your roll with the exception of when you roll a 6. If you roll a 6, instead of 6+1, your roll will be a 1.

Token revival

If a non-special token reaches the other side of the board, it can be exchange into a special token.

Play Log

Session 1:

Rule The Die is a 12x12 grid game with two 6-sided die for two players. Before a game begins, a player must flip a coin and the winner of the flip is allowed to go first. The grid will begin to be set up and a divider is set up so that the two opposing players cannot see the initial set up until the game begins. Each player has four tokens which are played anywhere on the first two rows nearest to the player. A player can then roll two die to dictate the number of moves he is allowed to make.

Tokens will eventually be adjacent to each other. This will indicate an immediate battle. Both players will rule their die and the one who rolls the higher die wins. Losing token will then be captured by the victor. In the case that a token is surrounded by two opposing tokens, you are captured by the opponent.

Session 2:

Rule The Die is a two player game that consists of a 12x12 grid, six tokens per player, and two die (one per player). In order to decide who starts the game, each player rolls their die and the higher number will be the first player. Among the six tokens a player has, four tokens are regular tokens and the other two are special tokens. The two special tokens each have a +1 power. This means that when they battle another token, a dice roll will be increased by +1 with the exception that the roll is a 6. If the roll is a 6, the roll will count as if it is a 1. When a token is able to move across the board, you can revive any piece that has been eliminated from your team. The grid will begin to be set up and a divider is set up so that the two opposing players cannot see the initial set up until the game begins. Each player has six tokens which are played anywhere on the first two rows nearest to the player. A player can then roll two die to dictate the number of moves he is allowed to make.

Additions to Rule The Die
  • Additional type of token, where new token has an additional ability
  • Allowed revival of any piece onto your board.

Session 3:

Rule The Die is a two player game that consists of a 12x12 grid, six tokens per player, and two die (one per player). In order to decide who starts the game, each player rolls their die and the higher number will be the first player. Among the six tokens a player has, four tokens are regular tokens and the other two are special tokens. The two special tokens each have a +1 power. This means that when they battle another token, a dice roll will be increased by +1 with the exception that the roll is a 6. If the roll is a 6, the roll will count as if it is a 1.

In lieu of a paper 12x12 grid, there was a pillow that had a grid on it. As for the tokens, we used green and yellow post it notes. To differentiate the two different teams, one team had a mark, while the other did not. When a normal token is able to move across the board, you can exchange that token for a special token.

Additions to Rule The Die
  • Updated revival rule so that a player may have more special tokens
  • Removed divider because it is not a convenient item to have
